General Information
Welcome to the British University Championships, sanctioned by Muay Thai GB (MTGB). Now in its THIRD year! We’ve grown massively since the inaugural event and this year looks bigger and better than the last!
We aim to give University Muay Thai clubs an annual competition to compete against one another and crown not only University British & Novice champions, but also crown the best University Muay Thai Club in Great Britain with the Champions Cup!
WHO CAN ENTER?
All competitors must be members of a University Muay Thai Club, absolutely no “independents”. This is to increase participation at official Uni MT clubs and to assure safe matches.
WHAT ARE THE CATEGORIES?
4️⃣ The event is split into four categories, Elite Championships, British Championships, Novice Championships and a none competitive “Freshers Pathway”. The tournament is split into male and female weight divisions.
1️⃣ Elite Championship is for athletes with six or more decision fights, this category will be fought under Amateur Muay Thai rules including elbows and knees to the head.
2️⃣ British Championship is for experienced or intermediate competitors. Entrants must not have had more than five decision fights under Muay Thai rules (A,B,C, N Class or Amateur rules). multiple fights in the same day (i.e. in a tournament format) are counted individually - e.g. fighting twice in a day counts as two fights experience.
3️⃣ Novice Championship is for those who have limited COMPETITIVE FULL CONTACT COMBAT EXPERIENCE or less than THREE FIGHTS under Muay Thai rules (A,B,C, N Class or Amateur rules). None decision inter-clubs do not count as Competitive experience. You may not have had more than 3 calendar years of Muay Thai training to enter the Novice category
4️⃣ Aimed at those who are not quite ready for a competitive bout, the “Freshers Pathway” will be an interclub no decision bout, the aim is to make the event more accessible and open to all whilst providing a clear pathway to the championship divisions. It’s for those who started training this Academic year (September 2025). Its a controlled contact bout, the referee will decide if contact is to hard, if so a yellow card will be issued, a second yellow will result in a red and disqualification.
⚠️ It’s imperative that you enter the correct category, anyone found to have miss lead the organisers will be disqualified and possibly banned from future events. This is to ensure a safe, level playing field for all competitors.
**ENTRANTS WITH ADDITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE (i.e. non-Muay Thai experience) MUST COMPLETE THE EXPERIENCED ATHLETE QUESTIONNAIRE (LINK - https://forms.gle/Tw5zDFt6pbdzzWrcA) in order to disclose any additional experience in full. These will be screened on a case-by-case basis, and if we believe you are not suitable for the category you have entered, we will contact you to notify you of any changes**
HOW MANY TIMES WILL I FIGHT?
Categories are limited to eight entries, so the winner would fight a maximum of three bouts to win the category. Freshers will have a single bout.
