General Information
The Funakoshi Open has a proud history dating back to 1996 when it began as an intra club event for Warrnambool and surrounding districts’. The event has evolved over time and is now an Australian Karate Federation (Victoria) endorsed event and is an important part of their annual events calendar.
The Funakoshi Open in 2020 will be offered as a "Zoom" online tournament rather than a face to face tournament due to the current Covid 19 pandemic. JUDGES DECISION WILL BE FINAL IN ALL EVENTS! There will be no procedure for lodging a protest. We are running this tournament as a fun opportunity for students to compete during a time where tournament opportunities are limited due to the Covid 19 Pandemic.
- Kata events will be via zoom & scoring will be based on WKF Kata scoring criteria.
- Free choice Kata (for all rounds and events).
- Team Kata (excluding bunkai) will be offered to those who are able to meet & compete as a team whilst complying with Covid 19 restrictions and laws.
- Kumite will be a "virtual Kumite Fighter event" Kumite will be judged using a red / blue flag system (a red or blue A 4 size card will be held up by each judge when Hantei is called ). The winner of each 1.5 minute shadow sparing round will be the competitor who demonstrates correct technique, technique variations, best combinations, strength, power, speed, physical fitness.
- Age category calculated as per age on scheduled day of event
- Only traditional gi are to be worn.
Competitors will be emailed a "Zoom" link & instructions the week prior to the tournament.
Entry for this event will be entirely handled online via www.kihapp.com

As per previous years there will be an "all abilities" demonstration events for competitors with special needs. No charge for All Abilities event. Please telephone or text Sensei Sarah for more information about the All Abilities event.
